A Spanish Grammar Lesson

The Indefinite Article

The word “a” is known as the “indefinite article” in English.  You have already learned the definite article “the,” which is “el” or “la” in Spanish.  The indefinite article is also either masculine or feminine depending on the gender of the noun it precedes.  The masculine indefinite article “a” is expressed as “un” in Spanish, and the feminine definite article “a” is expressed as “una” in Spanish depending on the gender of the noun it precedes.  “Un” is used before a masculine noun, and “una” is used before a feminine noun.

Accent rules and other Spanish grammar are beyond the scope of this lesson.  In his book, Picture Perfect Spanish, Dr. Memory teaches the indefinite article, accent rules, and other concepts of Spanish grammar through pictures.
