Y- The letter "Y" is considered to be a vowel in the English and Spanish languages in many words. In the English word "fly" the letter "y" sounds exactly like a long "i" and is the vowel in that word. In the English word "baby" the letter "y" sounds exactly like a long "e" and is a vowel in that word as well. The letter "Y" when used alone or at the end of a word in Spanish sounds like a long "e" as in eagle. The letter "Y" is pictured by seeing a "Y" in a road. In the picture below you see a "Y" in a road. On the left, an eagle says, "I'm alone." On the right, a movie screen reads The End. An eagle is also on the screen. This will teach you that the letter "Y" when used alone or at the end of a word in Spanish sounds like a long "e" as in eagle.
In all other instances when the letter "Y" comes before a vowel it sounds like "yuh" as in the word "yuck." That is why you also see the "yucky" stuff flowing down at the bottom of the "Y" in the road. You will notice that the "yucky" stuff comes before the V-owl to lock in this sound. The letter "y" makes this same basic sound in English as well. This "yuh" sound is the consonant sound of the letter "y." I know we havent begun to talk about consonants yet, but since the letter "y" was discussed for its vowel sound, the consonant sound was made part of the same picture. |
