The Spanish Vowels

All words are made up of syllables or a single syllable, and the vowel in each syllable determines the basic sound of the syllable   You can think of the vowels as the Big Bosses of every syllable. That simply means that the vowel forces the rest of the letters in its syllable to take on its sound. If the vowel is long, the syllable is a long syllable. If the vowel is short, the syllable is a short syllable. That is why vowels are so important.

Each Spanish vowel is clearly pronounced and not slurred over as happens sometimes in English. The Spanish Vowels are not pronounced the same way as in English, but by borrowing a technique from one of our sponsors, Doctor Memory,™  we have pictured them for you as they are pronounced in English.  The primary Spanish vowels are A, E, I, O, and U.  Y and other vowels are discussed last.  Let’s picture the sounds made by each one so that they are not easily forgotten.

On the next page we will go over each example.
